#PONPON | “Sounds From The Adugbo Side”

Pop Quiz! What is the latest mainstream sound at the moment in Nigeria and in some parts of Africa?

If your answer was “PON PON”, then you were right.

Believe it or not, the #Ponpon sound, as it is fondly called by music lovers and consumers in the “Adugbo” (popular lingua for neighbourhood or street in the western part of Nigeria), has now become a name synonymous with a mellow instrumentation characterized by a spaced-out mid-tempo groove which is made up of incidental kicks, throttling snare and a two-note piano (or any other instrument) key that makes the sound, you guessed it, #PonPon! It’s so simple, but it’s churning out alot of hit songs all over Africa.

How did this all start, I mean, who in the world started this trend that has led to many colossal hits from musicians who were bold enough to adopt it?

Let’s recount the producers who started the #PonPon trend and the artistes that had monster hits from it.

1.

Believe it or not, the origin of the #PonPon sound can be traced all the way to Ghana our West African neighbour. And we can thank the Ghanaian producer – Guilty Beatz and Ghanaian artiste of Nigerian decent; turn continental superstar – Mr Eazi for that.

Remember when Mr Eazi said in a tweet that “Ghana’s influence on present day ‘Naija Sound’ cannot be over emphasized!!!“? Nigerians were very furious at that statement, but over the course of several months, it is quite evident that the Ghanaian influence is what stirred-up the quite popular trend in beat production, otherwise called PonPon. Check out one of Mr Eazi’s quite popular tunes till date titled “Sample You“, produced by Guilty Beatz.

If my memory serves me right, super-producer DEL’B also adopted the #PonPon sound a while back when he produced the massive hit for Runtown titled “Mad Over You“. This was one of the songs that gave birth to the PonPon trend in Nigeria and it was a huge success with over 306,000 unique downloads on Mynotjustok.com and presently over 42 million video views on YouTube. You can’t beat that!

The man that came up with a brand new sound of his own also had a hint of #PonPon somewhere in his beats. Super hit music producer – Krizbeatz is undisputedly one of the most amazing producers on the African continent.

He produced one of the the biggest song in Africa at the time for Tekno titled “PANA“. I doubt it if anyone didn’t listen to Pana at its prime, but if for some very odd reason you missed it, here it is below.

Producer extraordinary – Kiddominant also did justice to the trending sound, as he unleashed yet another  smash single for Davido titled – “FALL“. Fall banged so hard on speakers across Africa and even in diaspora.

How about his recent effort for DMW act, Mayorkun titled – MAMA!

With a little over 1 million views on YouTube, Mama, as produced by Kiddominant, is also a huge success. I mean, this man has manage to churn out two of the biggest songs in Africa at the moment and he is not even in the continent! Salute to you sir.

One of Africa’s Superstar producers – Masterkraft, unknowingly to us, have been brewing his own take-over #PonPon beats in the studio in the hopes of taking over the world – so to speak…LOL. We see that in the recent releases from continental superstar and one of Nigeria’s biggest Afrobeats sound export – Wizkid. Wizkid is presently on the quest to prove his competition(s) wrong by vibbing on of the most trending beat-styles in Africa. In less than a week, Masterkraft teamed up with Wizkid to unleash 3 outstanding body of work:

Medicine

Odoo

Medicine (remix) featuring Flavour and Phyno.

Isn’t that amazing? From the looks of things, the releases will keep on coming #Notjustok fam, so brace up yourselves.

In as much as several artistes across Africa would love to claim that he or she is the #king of PonPon, the fact remains that, it’s an African product and pride. The influences brought about by the Ghanaians combined with that of Nigerian producers, gave birth to this beautiful rhythm we all now love so much. #PonPon.
